Ridge: A Cloud Core Banking Suite for Ethiopian SACCOs and MFIs

Ethiopian SACCOs and microfinance institutions are growing fast — but most are still running on a stack that cannot keep up. Spreadsheets for the loan book. A separate QuickBooks or Peachtree file for the ledger. A WhatsApp group for guarantor approvals. A paper register for Equb contributions. Every month-end becomes a reconciliation project, and every NBE or ECC return is a weekend of exports and manual joins.

Ridge is the alternative we built — a cloud core banking suite designed from day one for how an Ethiopian SACCO or MFI actually operates. Members, loans, guarantors, savings, dividends, payroll deduction, double-entry accounting and statutory returns all live in a single system, in a MySQL schema that belongs to your institution and no one else's.

Ridge is a cloud-based core banking suite for Ethiopian SACCOs and MFIs — one system that handles members or borrowers, loans, savings, double-entry accounting and NBE / ECC regulatory returns, with telebirr collections, Equb and corporate member structures, PAR aging and nightly EOD automation built in out of the box.

Why Ethiopian SACCOs and MFIs Are Outgrowing Their Current Stack

The gap between a growing cooperative and a modern core banking platform widens quickly. The symptoms are familiar to any CEO or finance manager we talk to in Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Bahir Dar or Mekelle.

  • Loan book and GL do not tie. The clerk restructures a loan in a spreadsheet, the finance officer books an adjusting journal three days later, and the trial balance drifts by a few hundred birr every month until someone forces a manual plug.
  • Approvals happen on WhatsApp and paper. A ETB 500,000 loan gets approved by the committee chair in a chat message. Months later, when audit asks for the decision trail, it is gone with the phone.
  • telebirr money is reconciled by eye. Repayments land in the merchant wallet, a staff member exports a CSV, matches it to member accounts in Excel, and manually posts the receipt. Mistakes compound.
  • PAR aging is a spreadsheet. A classification error in the Watch bucket flows through to the provisioning number on the balance sheet, and the first time anyone notices is the external audit.
  • NBE / ECC returns are a weekend. Statutory reports are pieced together from three systems, with every quarter requiring a fresh set of pivot tables.

A SACCO or MFI growing past a few hundred members cannot run on this stack. Ridge is designed to replace all of it — not supplement it.

What's in the Box: Nine Modules, One Database

Every screen in Ridge was built for a SACCO or MFI clerk, not a general-purpose ERP user. The workflow follows how an Ethiopian cooperative or microfinance institution actually operates.

  • Members & KYC — Individual, corporate and Equb members with the full application → review → approve → dormant → exit lifecycle, nominees and signatories, KYC and biometric hooks.
  • Loans built for Ethiopia — Tiered interest by amount and term, approval matrices by amount and product, DSR and deposit-multiplier eligibility, tranche disbursement (including school fees sent straight to a mobile money wallet), restructure and write-off that stay journal-safe.
  • Guarantors & collateral — Capacity math, title deeds, vehicles and movable collateral with registry references.
  • Savings & fixed deposits — Interest engines, FD maturity, early-withdrawal penalty, nightly accrual on EOD.
  • telebirr — Collect deposits and repayments, disburse via telebirr, with signed callbacks that reconcile automatically against the member account.
  • Real accounting — Double-entry GL with fiscal periods, hard close and reversal audit trail. Every loan action generates the correct journal — no external accounting file to reconcile.
  • End-of-Day automation — Nightly interest accrual, delinquency classification, provision top-ups, PAR aging. The CEO wakes up to numbers that already tie out.
  • Regulator reports — PAR aging (Watch → Substandard → Doubtful → Loss), member statements, loan statements and NBE / ECC statutory returns.
  • Audit + RBAC — Every change auditable. Roles inherit to individual endpoints. Nobody sees what they shouldn't.

The Ethiopian Features That Generic Core Banking Software Does Not Have

The reason Ridge works for Ethiopian institutions is not that we ported a Kenyan or Indian product and swapped the currency. It is that the primitives were designed around the Ethiopian cooperative and microfinance reality.

Equb and Corporate Member Structures

A traditional cooperative balance sheet in Ethiopia often has three member types operating in parallel — individual members, corporate members and Equb (rotating savings) groups. Each has its own contribution cadence, dividend rules and exit logic. Ridge models all three natively in one member view, so an Equb's monthly collection, a corporate's shareholding and an individual's savings balance all roll up to the same consolidated institution report.

telebirr-Native Collections and Disbursement

Because telebirr is where the money actually moves, Ridge treats it as a first-class rail rather than a bolt-on. Repayments collected via telebirr post directly to the member's loan account with a signed callback. School-fee tranches go out to a parent's wallet. The reconciliation that used to eat two full staff-days a month happens automatically.

NBE and ECC Statutory Returns, Ready to File

PAR aging, provisioning, member statements, loan statements and the quarterly returns required by the National Bank of Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Cooperative Commission are generated from the same transactional data that drives the GL. There is no second set of books to maintain. For deposit-taking SACCOs licensed by NBE / ECC, the optional DT SACCO Compliance Pack adds the EDIF quarterly calculator, PEARLS prudential ratios dashboard, insider lending register and NBE / ECC quarterly return.

A MySQL Schema That Belongs to You

Every tenant gets its own MySQL schema (sacco_yourslug). Even in the unlikely event of an application bug, a query cannot reach another SACCO's tables — the connection routes on tenant id at the driver level. This matters when a regulator asks where your members' data lives.

How Ridge Compares to the Alternative Approaches

Approach Spreadsheets + QuickBooks Generic core banking (ported) Ridge for Ethiopia
Loan book → GL Manual journals; constant drift GL exists but journals are generic Every loan action auto-journals; TB ties
telebirr CSV import, Excel match Via a reseller add-on Native collections + disbursement + callbacks
Equb & corporate Separate spreadsheets Not modelled First-class member types
NBE / ECC returns Weekend of pivots Needs a consultant to shape One click, from live data
Data isolation None Shared schema per region Your own MySQL schema
Time to first loan Weeks of setup 2–4 months with implementation partner Signup to login in 30 seconds

From Signup to First Loan in an Hour

The deployment story is intentionally short. We priced out the full implementation hassle most SACCOs expect from a core banking rollout and designed Ridge to skip it.

  1. Open your workspace. Sign up in 30 seconds. Your own MySQL schema is provisioned automatically.
  2. Configure once. Chart of accounts, loan products, approval matrix, guarantor rules — set them once, use them forever.
  3. Operate day-to-day. Onboard members, book loans, disburse to mobile money, collect repayments, run EOD — one app, one team.
  4. Close and report. PAR aging, member statements, NBE / ECC returns — one click. No spreadsheets. No month-end cliff.

Pricing starts at ETB 9,300 per month on the Starter plan (up to 500 members) and scales through Growth, Professional and Enterprise. Every plan includes members, loans, accounting and NBE / ECC reports — the extras you grow into are telebirr integration, EOD automation, Loan Origination System, multi-branch, custom domain and SLA-backed support.

Who Ridge Is For

Ridge is built for the specific institutions that regulate and operate under NBE and ECC frameworks in Ethiopia.

  • SACCOs — from new primary cooperatives with a few hundred members to federated multi-branch operations with tens of thousands.
  • Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) — DSR-based lending, tranche disbursement, telebirr-first collections.
  • Equb groups — formalised rotating savings structures that need the same accounting and audit discipline as a cooperative.
  • Deposit-taking SACCOs (DT SACCOs) — licensed by NBE / ECC, needing EDIF, PEARLS and the quarterly prudential return.

The platform currently runs 50+ institutions and has booked ETB 3 billion in loans year-to-date with 99.9% uptime over the last twelve months. It is built and supported by Redian Software from Addis Ababa, with the same engineering team that supports the rest of our African deployments.

Start Where You Are

The honest reason to move off spreadsheets and generic accounting software is not that they do not work — plenty of SACCOs run on them for years. The reason is that the gap between what your current stack can prove and what the regulator (and your own board) will ask for keeps widening. A loan book that ties to the GL, a PAR number that an auditor accepts, a telebirr collection that reconciles itself and a quarterly NBE return that files on time are the baseline for any Ethiopian cooperative that intends to grow past a few branches.

Ridge is the shortest path to that baseline — a 30-day free trial, no credit card, full-feature access, your own MySQL schema, cancel any time. Start the trial at ridge.rediansoftware.com/et or talk to our team for a walkthrough tailored to your institution's size and member mix.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ridge and who is it built for?
+
Ridge is a cloud core banking suite built by Redian Software for Ethiopian SACCOs, MFIs, Equb groups and deposit-taking cooperatives. It handles members, loans, guarantors, savings, dividends, payroll deduction, double-entry accounting and NBE / ECC statutory returns in one platform.
Is Ridge compliant with NBE and ECC requirements?
+
Yes. PAR aging, member and loan statements and the quarterly returns required by the National Bank of Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Cooperative Commission are generated directly from the live transactional data. Licensed DT SACCOs can add the DT SACCO Compliance Pack for EDIF, PEARLS and the quarterly prudential return.
How does Ridge handle telebirr collections and disbursement?
+
telebirr is a first-class rail in Ridge, not a bolt-on. Repayments collected via telebirr post directly to the member's loan account with a signed callback that reconciles automatically. Disbursements (including tranche payouts like school fees to a parent's wallet) go out through the same integration.
Is our data isolated from other SACCOs on the platform?
+
Yes. Every tenant gets its own MySQL schema. Connections route on tenant id at the driver level, so a query from one institution cannot reach another institution's tables even in the unlikely event of an application bug.
How long does it take to go live on Ridge?
+
Signup to first login takes about 30 seconds. Chart of accounts, loan products, approval matrix and guarantor rules are configured once from the admin screens. Most SACCOs are booking real loans within an hour of signup. A 30-day free trial is available with no credit card and full-feature access.
What does Ridge cost?
+
Pricing starts at ETB 9,300 per month on the Starter plan (up to 500 members) and scales through Growth, Professional and Enterprise tiers. Every plan includes members, loans, accounting and NBE / ECC reports. Deposit-taking SACCOs can add the DT SACCO Compliance Pack for an additional ETB 12,400 per month.
